Macs/Apples - iBook won't start up
Expert: Jeffrey J. Wrobel - 4/20/2005
Question
iBook G3 800 Mhz (white, dual USB) OSX 10.3.8. 600+RAM.
Last night while my wife was finished working on the iBook she
was in the process of shutting it down (you know, the spinny
thing spins before the screen goes black) she inadvertently
closed the lid, which, I think, confused the iBook into thinking it
should immediately go to sleep. When my daughter opened the
lid this morning to turn it on, the screen was blue with the
spinny thing still spinning (to shut down) and then the screen
went black, as if it finally finished the job of shutting down.
The problem is that it won't start up at all right now. Nothing.
No noises, nothing. Do you think something got fried inside
when the lid was shut in the process of shutting down?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
Dear Craig,
It is possible that there is a logic board problem, but I wouldn't put it at the top of the list. Here's the best answer to your troubles, in my experience:
Take out the battery and unplug the power adapter. Wait about a minute, then put the battery back in and plug the power plug in. Wait about 10 seconds, then push the power button and immediately hold down the OPTION, APPLE, P and R keys (in that order--hold down the OPTION key, keep it down while you hold down the APPLE key, keep it down, and so on until all four are being held down). Do this as quickly as you can (a few seconds) and keep holding the keys down. You will hear the startup chime once, keep holding, twice, keep holding, and three times. Right after the 3rd chime, let go of all the keys and let it start up. You will most likely have to reset the date and time because they will have been reset.
What you just did resets (zaps) the Parameter Random Access Memory or PRAM. It holds certain startup settings, time, etc and is retained there by the PRAM battery in most Macs (and PCs). The RAM chip is what's known as "volatile memory" which simply means that the memory will hold information as long as it has a power supply. When that power supply is interupted, the memory chip loses its data and resets itself. This is done by the Option, Apple, P and R keys and manually by removing power to the PRAM chip by disconnecting the PRAM battery by hand.
The interesting thing is that the ibook does NOT have a PRAM battery. Instead, it uses a small capacitor to store a small amount of electricity to "cover" in the event that the regular main battery is switched and the AC Power supply is unplugged. However, this only lasts for 20 seconds, then it dies. That's why I had you disconnect the battery and power supply for one minute--it cleared the PRAM. I had you do the PRAM keys to show you how to do it without taking the battery out and to make absolutely certain that the memory (and logic board) were reset to factory defaults.
You should be all set. If you're not, please get right back to me and I will assist you further, okay?
Thanks,
Jeffrey Wrobel,
