[10.11 El Capitan] MBP 15" late 2008 fror einfach ein - Ursache?

Nach einiger Zeit nach dem Start fror mein Mac einfach ein. Nicht einmal über das Netz (ich gab SSH wegen Remote Shutdown frei) war er noch erreichbar. Das Bild stand am 15" Schirm des MBP als auch am externen 27" Monitor einfach still, keine Tastenkombination half.

Wo könnte die Ursache liegen?
Im MBP stecken schon seit langem 8GB RAM und eine 960GB SSD
