Viewing multilingual text documents
TextEdit can display text and symbols in multilingual documents by using Unicode, a worldwide standard for encoding multilingual text.
TextEdit can also open documents in encodings other than Unicode. Choose File > Open and choose an encoding from the Plain Text Encoding pop-up menu.
